Seymour Race 9 Preview: Rated Prices, Tips & Pace Read

The King Zone · 11 Oct 2026

Seymour Race 9 preview: a 96.86% pressure reading, 13 runners and Kingsley's rated prices against this morning's market, free on The King Zone.

Thirteen go around in the feature at Seymour on Sunday afternoon, and the shape of it is written before they jump: this is a race with a genuine speed problem up front.

The race

Seymour Race 9 jumps at 4:55pm AEDT on Sunday 11 October 2026 for $200,000 prize money, with 13 runners, fine weather and the rail out at the true entire circuit. The runner comments point to a mile, and several of these are either stepping up to the trip or returning to it. It is a strong, deep Cup-style field with the top weight at 58.5kg on Detonator Jack and a long tail of horses racing off 54kg.

The pace picture

The tempo band reads Very Fast with a pressure figure of 96.86 per cent, which is about as hot as a card gets. Lim's Saltoro (7) is the one who maps to lead on a ppir of 1 — ppir measures predicted settling position, so a low number means closer to the speed — with Wymark (9) on 2, Al Duca (4) on 3 from the outside gate in 12, and Magnaspin (8) on 4. Saganti (13) and Immediacy (6) sit in the next band at 5 and 6.

That is four or five horses all wanting the same real estate, and it tilts the race hard toward the closers. Al Duca got an easy lead last time and was still run down; doing the same job again with this much company either side of him is a far harder assignment. Black Storm (14) also wants to roll forward and will not find it easy to do so. At the other end of the grid, New York Hurricane (16) on a ppir of 13, Doctor Askar (5) on 12 and My Brothers Keeper (17) on 11 will be giving the leaders a long head start.

Kingsley's selections

His top pick is Storm Leopard (11), rated $5 against a $4.60 market this morning — so even the selection is no overlay on price. The case is improvement rather than exposed form: only nine starts, third-up, and now drawn the inside after being bustled up from a wide gate at Flemington last time and finding nothing late. From barrier 1 he can take a midfield spot without spending anything early, and he rates the strongest of these on class.

His second pick Detonator Jack (3) is the main danger and, on price, the more interesting one: rated $6.50 against a $5.00 market this morning. He is back at the mile with four wins from 18 at the trip, and the Caulfield run reads better than the result, restrained out of it and still finishing fourth. A hot tempo is exactly what a horse with his turn of foot needs, with the top weight the one reservation.

His third pick Doctor Askar (5) is rated $21 against a $19.00 market this morning, resuming off 134 days for Chris Waller with Craig Williams up. He will be a long way back and needs the front end to collapse, which this pressure reading at least makes plausible. His fourth pick Immediacy (6) is rated $11 against an $8.50 market this morning, fitter second-up after being baulked more than once at Flemington, with Ethan Brown staying on and the step up to the mile in his favour.

Only 9 starts and he's the one with upside in this. Bustled forward from barrier 13 at Flemington last time and found nothing late, no wonder after that effort. Draws the inside now, 3rd up, and can settle midfield instead of burning petrol early. Rates the strongest of them on class for mine. Top pick, though he looks short enough at the quote.

Back to the mile and that's where he lives, 4 wins from 18 at the trip. Race shape was all against him at Caulfield last start, restrained back out of it and he still picked up 4th on the line. With this much early speed on paper, a horse with his acceleration gets it run to suit from the back half. Top weight the only knock. Second pick and the biggest threat to the top pick.

Resuming off 134 days for Waller with Williams aboard. The Rosehill run in the heavy means nothing at $91. He'll be getting well back from here and needs the race to fall apart in front of him. Third pick, plenty to prove fresh.

Fitter second-up and the Flemington run was better than it reads, baulked more than once and never properly let go. Up to the mile is a step the right way for a horse that wants ground, and Brown sticks. Fourth pick.

The metrics

CAM is the composite ability rating, and New York Hurricane (16) tops the field on 96.3196, with Detonator Jack second on 94.6874 and Justadeel (12) third on 94.2018. Storm Leopard ranks fourth on 93.9559.

CSW is the class-speed-weight time rating, and there Al Duca leads on 96.41 from Wymark on 96.24 and Immediacy on 96.00. Cruising speed, the tempo a horse can sustain mid-race, has Black Storm best on 102.6, Al Duca next on 101.8 and Lim's Saltoro third on 99.8 — confirming exactly which horses will be contesting the early lead.

Acceleration, the finishing-burst measure, is where the race turns. New York Hurricane ranks first on 102.556, Detonator Jack second on 98.4057 and My Brothers Keeper third on 96.6905. Lim's Saltoro ranks last of the 13 on 71.9368 — the likely leader owns the slowest finish in the field, which is the single most damning line on the page.
