Bendigo Race 8 Preview: Kings Valley Tops A Fast Tempo
Bendigo Race 8 preview: a fast tempo at 85% pressure reshapes the $500,000 feature. Kingsley's top four, rated prices and the metrics that matter.
Thirteen go around for $500,000 at Bendigo at 4:55pm AEDT, and the shape of the race matters more than the form lines. The tempo reads fast, the pressure gauge sits at 85.01%, and that points the finish straight at the horses dropping out the back.
The race
Bendigo's Race 8 is the day's feature, a $500,000 staying contest over 2400m on a Good surface with the rail out at the true entire circuit and overcast skies above. Thirteen runners, weights from 60kg down to 54kg, and a field with genuine depth through the middle of the market rather than one dominant name on raw ratings.
That weight spread is part of the story. Starford (1) and The Euphrates (2) both shoulder 60kg; Suntora (7) gets in with 55kg and Litzdeel (8) with 54.5kg, and in a race likely to be run at a solid clip those few kilos are the difference between seeing it out and treading water.

The pace picture
A fast tempo band with pressure at 85.01% is the key to everything. PPIR is the predicted in-run position, where 1 means a horse settles closest to the speed, and the horse who maps to lead here is Machine Gun Gracie (9) off barrier five. She was the one setting it up at Caulfield last start and had nothing in reserve when they arrived; the winkers come off but she is rolling forward again into a race that should be run hard.
Behind her the pressure builds rather than eases. Litzdeel sits on a PPIR of 2, So You Are (4) on 3 from the inside gate and The Euphrates on 4, which means three serious chances are all committed to the first half of the race. The Euphrates rates top on raw time but he is the one they will be chasing, and over 2400m at this tempo that is a difficult brief after he led and was run down seven days ago. So You Are won at Randwick over 2600m with the race in his hands on pace; back 200m in trip and parked up front again, he is rated $6.00 against a $4.20 market this morning, and that gap is deliberate.
At the other end, Kings Valley (6) maps on a PPIR of 10 and Starford on 13. A fast speed on paper over this trip is exactly what those two want.
Kingsley's selections
His top pick is Kings Valley (6), and he is also the Golden Bullet in this race. The shape was against him last start at Flemington and he still went within half a length, he backs up in four days for a stable that thrives on quick turnarounds, and here the tempo finally works with him rather than against him. He is rated $2.60 against a $3.40 market this morning, so the money on offer is better than the assessment.
His second pick Litzdeel (8) is the main threat. She was a sound long fifth at Geelong last week, has been honest throughout the preparation, Damian Lane takes the ride and she maps midfield rather than into the fire. The one reservation is a suspicion she wants further than 2400m. She is rated $10.00 against an $8.00 market this morning, with early support already noted.
His third pick Suntora (7) was beaten a whisker at Caulfield over this trip after being hooked out widest to chase, which is the hard way to lose. She is at her peak distance with 55kg and is rated $16.00 against a $12.00 market this morning. His fourth pick Starford (1) got into all sorts at Caulfield, racing tight and five wide before giving in, and that run is best ignored; 60kg and barrier 12 are the problems, not the ability. He is rated $21.00 against a $17.00 market this morning.
Best acceleration in the field by a street and he tops the combined numbers as well. Fast speed on paper over 2400m is exactly what a horse coming from the rear wants, and the shape was dead against him last start when he still went within half a length at Flemington. Backs up in 4 days for a yard that thrives on it. Golden Bullet, MAX BET......Lets Go !!
Sound enough for a long 5th at Geelong last week and she's been honest all prep. Lane gets the leg-up, as good as they come, maps midfield and there's been early money about her. Only niggle is she looks like she's crying out for more ground than this. Second pick and the main threat to the top selection.
Beaten a whisker at Caulfield last start over this trip and she did it the hard way, hooked out widest to chase. Smart finishing speed, right at her peak trip, and only 55kg. Third pick.
Got into all sorts at Caulfield last time, raced tight and 5 wide on the turn, then couldn't go on. Happy to draw a line through it. Won second-up last prep and the class rating holds up with these, but 60kg and barrier 12 don't do him any favours. Fourth pick.

CAM is the composite ability rating, and Kings Valley tops the field at 108.575 — the only runner above 100. Suntora is ranked second on 95.5592, with Male Model (15) third.
Acceleration measures late finishing speed, and Kings Valley is ranked first again at 125.835, clear of Male Model on 101.353 and Suntora on 100.007. That combination — best composite ability and best acceleration into a race run at 85% pressure — is the single strongest claim on this page.
CSW is the class-speed-weight time rating, and there the picture flips: The Euphrates leads on 102.39 from So You Are on 100.88, with Kings Valley third on 99.89. Cruising speed, a horse's sustainable mid-race tempo, also favours the on-pace brigade, The Euphrates first on 99.8 ahead of Machine Gun Gracie on 99 and So You Are on 97. In other words, the time figures belong to the leaders and the finishing figures belong to the closers.
Watch the first 600m: if Machine Gun Gracie and The Euphrates go at each other early, the race is Kings Valley's to win from last.
