The Max Bet: Gen Riro at Moonee Valley

Kingsley's max bet is Gen Riro (also referred to as Jen Rashiro) in race seven at Moonee Valley over 1,600 metres, stepping up to 2,400 metres, which he considers more suitable. Reviewing the horse's last-start replay, he describes it getting cover off an average tempo and finishing fast down the outside, running the fastest last 400 for the day and just missing.

He is drawn on this horse for several reasons: it is ready to peak fourth up, gets a distance rise, and drops around 10 kilograms in weight, which he calls "absolutely huge." Looking at his ratings database, he points to a last-start rating of 86 and a last-600 rating of 112 off a slow early tempo, plus a strong last-200 figure of 111, which he reads as a horse still improving. His view is that the value lies in predicting improvement rather than backing a horse that has already run its peak figure.

The negative he flags is race strength: the horse is stepping up to an 87 strength rating and carrying more weight, though it has been racing in lower-strength races, which he says is why the price is better. He took around $8 about the horse and says about $6.50 is still available, expecting it to improve to a rating near 90 from barrier 8, ideally settling around sixth with cover.

The Randwick Feature: A Heavy 10

Kingsley turns to a Randwick race on a heavy 10, which he finds interesting from a form perspective. He raises the ongoing question of how heavily to factor in track condition when pricing, and whether to discard form when moving on or off heavy going.

He expects more pace than the market anticipates, naming Lindamman, Gringots and Robusto as likely to go forward from wide draws, which lifts horses that sit off the speed. He notes his CAM rating does not yet factor in track condition, so Fan Girl's strong general metrics are marked down: her heavy-track ratings are 97, 87, 66, 84 and 90, all below par, and she has no placings from five heavy-track starts.

Assessing the Contenders

Kingsley says Via Cistina is the only runner he could back, marking her at 220 and citing James McDonald, barrier one and a clear class edge, though she is an 8-year-old first up on a heavy track and set for the Cox Plate rather than this race. He rates Gringots the likely winner if Via Cistina cannot handle the heavy. Aliana he calls the X factor over 1400 metres with a query on the heavy. He talks himself around the race, concluding it may be a "stay out" race given the question marks.
