What Max Bet Is

Kingsley introduces the first episode of Max Bet, a show he plans to run every Friday, in which he works through one or two races for the coming Saturday, sometimes including feature races, and occasionally reviews bets from earlier in the week.

The show is built around a two-way exchange. Kingsley says it is not only about telling viewers what he intends to back, but also about gathering their input. He asks for two things: your max bet for the weekend (kept to one or two selections) and the reasoning behind it. A max bet, he explains, is your best bet of the day — a term he still texts to a friend, with a "double max bet" or "triple max bet" reserved for his strongest views. He frames the show as collaborative learning, noting that no one is right or wrong all the time, and that tips are opinions.

Doomben Race 7 — Deep Respect

Kingsley's golden bullet is Deep Respect in race seven at Doomben. Last start over 1600m — its first attempt at that distance — Deep Respect ran career-best time, CSW and last-600 ratings despite what he considers an unsuitable trip and settling back off the speed.

The horse now drops back to 1350m at Doomben. Kingsley notes it has won five races, four at Doomben and three from six over 1350m, which he calls its wheelhouse. He accepts the race pressure is fast but says he is comfortable with on-pace horses in sprints up to about 1350m, and expects Deep Respect to settle around sixth to eighth and sprint home.

Comparing it with top-rated Kamala (cam 100 vs Deep Respect's 96), he argues Kamala's peak ratings come over 1600m, with two low 1350m runs at Doomben (77 and 76), and that Kamala is going up in weight. He also opposes Castellian, which won last start from the lead and, he believes, won't settle as close, is up in weight and is in a higher-class race.

Prices mentioned: Deep Respect opened $8, was into $5.50, with a bullet price of $4. He rates Sultry Siren (weight advantage, one from one course and distance) as some value, with Set to Shine and A Muer noted for placings. He states he will only back Deep Respect in the race.

Randwick Race 8 — Tarpolan

Kingsley looks at one horse here: Tarpolan, second up over 1100m. First up, Tarpolan started odds-on, missed the kick from a wide barrier, raced forward, didn't settle and used too much energy, then weakened badly over the final 100m — which he attributes to a lack of race fitness.

Since then Tarpolan has trialled (740m), settling and jumping better. The horse draws barrier one on Saturday, and Kingsley raises an open question for viewers: whether barrier one is a positive or negative for a horse that hasn't settled close previously.

His case is based on upside rather than ratings. Tarpolan carries 52.5kg — around a 5kg advantage on the top-weighted rivals — and Kingsley believes 1100m is its ideal distance. He also notes a gear change (ear muffs). He generally dislikes backing horses up in the weights in higher-class races while giving weight to horses coming through the grades, and includes some lay opinions on that basis.
