Max Bet Ep 4: Saturday Wet Track Plays + Group 2 PB Lawrence Preview

In Episode 4 of Max Bet, Kingsley works through two Saturday selections: Palaton at Rose Hill in the wet and Private Eye in the Group 2 PB Lawrence at Caulfield.

Rose Hill Race 5: Palaton

Kingsley expects a heavy track at Rose Hill, rated a heavy 8, 9 or 10 depending on rain. He draws on historical data from 2018 showing an inside barrier edge on heavy tracks at the venue, plus figures indicating cruising ranks one and two return a positive result (+17.59 from 449 bets).

Palaton draws barrier one and rates rank one on cruising, meaning the horse has the pace to lead or sit third along the fence. Kingsley points to Palaton's trial win on a heavy nine, where the horse peeled off the middle of the track and ran the fastest time of the day, as a key reason for his confidence. He notes Palaton appears primed first-up off two trials.

He compares the field on ratings. Skyhook has a higher peak rating (90) but carries 60.5kg against Palaton's 54kg, a swing of about 7kg from their February meeting, and is untried on wet ground. He marks against Nashville Jack for lacking a peak rating, Grand Prix for needing a new peak in higher class, and Blitzburg, whose Canonbury win came off a slow tempo in what the race-strength figures suggest was a weak group three. He marks Palaton at $2.20 and calls it his max bet.

Group 2 PB Lawrence: Private Eye

For the PB Lawrence over 1400m at Caulfield, Kingsley notes the rail is out 9m and that the 1400m start historically favours leaders. He wants horses on the pace.

He expects Heirtoshock (barrier 10) to press forward, with Private Eye (barrier eight) potentially settling one-one. Evaporate draws barrier three, which Kingsley considers tricky if not leading. Overall he predicts a slow tempo, which he believes suits Private Eye's finishing sprint.

Private Eye ran fourth in a Stradbroke off a fast early pace and won a trial eight days earlier at Warwick Farm. Kingsley marks the horse at $2.60, noting the price firmed from around $3.70 into $3.20 and sat at $2.90 in his live pricing. He cites Private Eye's cruising rating of 108, its acceleration numbers, and the Nash Rawiller–Joe Pride combination as positives, though he lists old legs as a negative.

The Rest of the Field

Kingsley rates Evaporate his second pick and only danger, citing continued improvement despite a low strength rating. He is against Heirtoshock first-up, Attrition, Pinstripe, Desert Lightning (up 4.5kg in weight), Sercen and Anacheda on class or form grounds. He suggests keeping an eye on Moira over further and notes Yellow Sam's rank one acceleration could sneak a place from barrier two.
