My Cup Week Reality
Kingsley reviews the Melbourne Cup Carnival results across four days, walks through two Saturday races, and traces the performance of The King Zone's official tips since June.
How Cup Week Played Out
Kingsley describes the carnival as a roller coaster — down, up, down, up. Derby Day (1st November) opened at minus 19%, with 38 bets and seven winners. Melbourne Cup Day returned 15% loss on his own book: 56 bets, 16 winners, a 28% strike rate. He explains that he lost on cup day because he overstaked on the Melbourne Cup, a conscious decision made months out and funded separately from his usual betting, using NRL grand final winnings. Oaks Day (Thursday) produced 10 bets, five winners at 87%. Saturday's Champions Day at Flemington, run on a wet track, returned 34 bets, 10 winners at 34% ROI across the board.
For the four-day package, betting to win $200 with a maximum $100 outlay: total outlay $7,687, return $9,013, profit $1,326, ROI 17.2%. This is based on the average high price after release for the main bookies, which averages around 105%. Kingsley notes you cannot get that exact price but can get close by using Bet Fair, best tote and shopping around. He states he personally lost over the four days, having laid a few winners and bet on the cup. For the full week from the start of November to the 8th, the tips returned 14%.
Two Saturday Races
Kingsley looks at Rose Hill Race 9 and Weeping Woman, which had a high relative weight and a negative predicted pace, yet firmed from 450 to 320. He notes he places more emphasis on predicted pace over distance races than over an 1100-metre event, making this one interesting. He also points to the TKZ prices being useful for predicting fluctuations.
He then covers Flemington Race 9 from a patterns angle. Pride of Jenny drifted from 380 out to $5 (580 on Bet Fair) and carried a pattern of finishing first-up placings before failing again. He references Mr Brightside winning the race the previous year, and stresses that recognising patterns in form — gear changes, jockey changes, runs from a spell, barrier preferences, pace suitability — remains hard to capture through data alone.
The Journey Since June 12
Kingsley steps through the official tips month by month. June (12th–30th) returned plus 13%. July was minus 6.1%. The first two weeks of August were a bad run: 159 bets, 19 winners, a roughly $2,400 loss to the $200 staking plan. The following two weeks recovered to plus 20% (295 bets, 78 winners, 26 total). September returned 5%, October 7%, and November about 14% (185 bets, 52 winners, 28%).
Overall the official tips sit at 6,885 races, 1,918 winners, a 27% strike rate and 5.3% profit at high price, with a Bet Fair SP figure of 2.7%. Lays run at minus 13.6%, number one selections at plus five.
Metrics He Highlighted
Kingsley points to two factors beating the overall 5%: a cruising rank of one (764 bets, 10.8%) and first-up horses defined as 55 days or more off (449 bets, 14.6%). He also ran favourites between $1.40 and $3 by track and by jockey since 2018, reading out the notable figures on screen.
Kingsley signs off with plans to return Thursday, Saturday and Friday, and to cover lays next week.
