The Grind Ep3: Mastering Betfair SP, Lays & Market Angles – A Professional Approach

The King Zone · 30 July 2026

Standfirst

In episode three of The Grind, Kingsley focuses on Betfair, working through backs, lays, and market angles using data from The King Zone system between 12 June and 31 July. He runs live queries, places example bets, and demonstrates several market tactics.

System Results to Date

Kingsley reviews the official tips over roughly six to seven weeks since launch. At the high price, the officials are winning 3%, but at Betfair SP they show a loss of around 5% after commission. The number one selection, which appears in every race, performed better: across 2,249 races it showed a 10% profit at the high price and roughly 4% at Betfair SP after commission. Kingsley notes commission is only paid on winning bets, so his effective cost sits around 3% off the ROI. He states he pays between 3 and 4% commission and has no affiliate arrangement with Betfair.

Laying with Betfair SP

Kingsley argues Betfair is a strong tool for laying, since punters cannot lay at the high price. The official lays over the period showed a 14% loss if backed at the high price, and roughly a 6.5% profit if laid at Betfair SP before commission, indicating most of his lays drift. He then applies filters. Laying short-priced favourites ($1.10–$4) showed no value, while lays with a Betfair SP of $10.50 or greater produced an 18% profit before commission across 622 selections. Kingsley cautions that short-priced favourites are harder to lay than they appear, as the market is often correct.

Combining System Metrics

Kingsley demonstrates building queries by combining tools available on The King Zone: the class-speed-weight (CSW) rank, the jockey edge (rated -10 to +15 on profitability, not ability), and the probability difference between the bullet price and high price. Layering these filters improved results—for example, official lays outside the top three CSW ranks moved the figure from -6% to -14%. One combined lay system (sprint races 800–1200m, poor cruising rank, slow tempo, and not an overlay) produced around -35% for backers, meaning profit for layers. A distance-race version using acceleration rank, distance, slow tempo, and the probability difference returned roughly -17% across 274 lays.

Live Betting and Market Tactics

Kingsley places example bets live. He explains Betfair SP is set from the weight of money in the back and lay columns, and that the weighted average price (WAP) helps avoid pushing prices too far, particularly for automated systems. In one lay on Radiant Light at Betfair SP, he set a $500 liability and won $245 after $10 commission. He also shows how he uses small backs to briefly hold a horse's price down before laying, and notes bookies sometimes keep favourites artificially short, creating short-priced lay opportunities on Betfair. He stresses these figures are only six to seven weeks old and can change.

Kingsley encourages viewers to combine the system's tools to build their own angles rather than relying on official tips alone.
